Donald Cameron

Steamotion

This is my black and white take on the Falkirk Wheel, the world’s first rotating canal boat
lift. The genius of it’s engineering allows it to fully rotate using just enough power to boil a
kettle, and I shot it in long exposure to try capturing the sense of motion as it raises/low-
ers boats to the next level of the canal. A technically difficult shot to get right in terms of
calculating the correct exposure time for the effect I was looking for, and with quite a lot of
waiting around for each half-hourly rotation to coincide with suitable cloud cover.
